The Department of Fisheries State-wide education program has won the Science Outreach Initiative prize at the 2010 Western Australian Science Awards.
Over the past year, 40,000 students and community members took part in 900 activities and programs developed and produced by Department staff.
The program operates from the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre at Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth as well as locations around WA, including Christmas Island, Cocos Island, Broome, Carnarvon, Geraldton, Busselton, Bunbury, Albany and Esperance.
The Department's education program aims to increase awareness of sustainable fisheries and WA’s marine environment, enabling the community to help ensure the long term future of our fisheries and aquatic ecosystems.
While the program is based on the science that underpins sustainable management of WA’s marine environment, the focus is very much on innovative, fun, hands-on activities.
