Your journey begins with an introduction into the Leeuwin Current...

before moving through the various fisheries ‘bioregions’ of WA, discussing iconic species and the fisheries in these regions.

This interactive tour includes an up-close and personal experience with the inhabitants of our marine rock pool.  You also can get a taste of life as an early pearl diver, by trying on an old-fashioned brass diver’s helmet.

In addition, there is the opportunity to learn about biomass and food pyramids, using our Creature Calculator to compare your biomass with that of some marine species.  We will also guide you along the Scientific Trail, where you can view some Western Australian marine life in our aquariums and see working fisheries and marine research laboratories. This provides students a great opportunity to learn about the science that supports fisheries management, ensuring that we have fish for the future.

The tour is predominantly ‘guided’, but, if time permits, students may have a short period of free time to look through the exhibition hall at their leisure. Guided school visits of the exhibition hall are preferred and also highly recommended.

Worksheets for the NMDC exhibition hall are available upon request and tailored to fit in with your classroom focus.  If you would like your students to complete a worksheet whilst on the NMDC Education Guided Tour, please advise staff at the time of booking your excursion.  You should allow an additional half an hour for students to complete the worksheets.

Please note that including worksheets in the guided tour is not recommended for large groups where concurrent activities are occurring.
