Get Green for 5 June 2009 - World Environment Day

Climate change continues to be the most significant environmental issue facing the world today. As a result, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has chosen World Environment Day this year to reflect the need for urgent action to combat climate change caused by human activities.

United Nations Environment Programme

This year's theme - 'Your planet needs you! UNite to combat climate change'- continues to highlight the need for nations to work together to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (namely carbon dioxide and other gases emitted by your car, power stations, industries and appliances).

There are many ways that you could help celebrate World Environment Day and help make a difference to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You could:
  • switch off the stand-by mode on your TV and computer;
  • turn off your lights when you aren't in the room;
  • walk or ride to school or work;
  • clean up your school, local beach or park by putting rubbish in the bin or, better still, recycle!
  • plant a tree; or
  • make some art from recycled materials or recycle your own paper.

Everyone can make a difference if we unite to combat climate change.
