The Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre (NMDC) at Hillarys Boat Harbour is proud to be hosting a variety of activities and events to celebrate National Science Week in 2007.
Showcasing the variety and wonder of Western Australia’s marine and freshwater life, and the science and management behind the State’s aquatic environment and fisheries – the NMDC appeals to visitors of all ages.
Venture into WA’s vast aquatic world with our interactive touch-screens, pull on an old-fashioned pearl diver’s massive brass helmet, find out how much you weigh – in abalone, come face to face with a great white shark, check out some of WA’s marine species at our rock pool and aquariums, take a walk down the scientific viewing gallery, and enjoy a number of special activities and events for National Science Week.

The Scientific Artist 20 August to 7 September
Come along and view a selection of works by internationally renowned marine artist Roger Swainston. Roger has developed new techniques for accurately capturing the beauty and variety of marine life during a career that took him from simple illustrations for field guides to a commissioned artist on expeditions to some of the remotest places on Earth. Although underwater photography has produced stunning images, there is still a role for the human eye and artistic interpretation in science. |
Wild Science 23 August
Exploring the theme ‘Science, Sustainability and Southern Waters’, expert guest speakers will help profile current scientific research and highlight the contribution of science to ensuring ecological sustainability in southern Western Australia.
Bringing the Beach to YOU! 20 to 24 August
Schools are also invited to be a part of our special program of activities for the week, which will provide interactive, hands-on science learning experiences by bringing the beach to you!
The Life Aquatic Dive into your ideal career…or just whet your appetite! 24 August
This hands-on program is aimed at students aged 15 years and older who are interested in a career in aquatic-based sciences and related industries. Careers explored will include research science, aquaculture, the professional fishing industry and more!
