Work is well underway developing an innovative curriculum-linked WA Marine Education Manual and Teachers' Kit.
In February, a launch was held at the NMDC to announce that the Department of Fisheries and Woodside Energy had formed a joint initiative to advance marine education throughout schools in Western Australia through the production of the kit.
This will provide teachers and students specifically tailored education resources and tools to study Western Australia's unique marine ecosystems and immense coastline.
The kit will contain a variety of cross-curricula resources to help teachers develop and support marine education programs, including lesson plans, interactive activities, extension activities, case studies, student worksheets, fact sheets and information on current and emerging issues.
The kit's resources will be structured across the following five themed modules:
Additional planning tools will be provided to teachers to assist them in developing a marine teaching-learning program and to utilise all the elements of the kit.
Through collaboration with other marine and environmental education providers, researchers and marine managers, the kit will enable educators to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date education program in this specialised and important subject.
Part 1 of the WA Marine Education Manual and Teachers' Kit, for primary schools, will be implemented in 2011. Part 2 of the kit, for secondary schools, is expected to come on-stream in 2012.
