The Department of Fisheries’ community and schools education program operates at the Naturaliste Marine Discovery Centre and at many other locations around the State, including the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, South-west, South coast and the metropolitan area.

The Department of Fisheries Community and Education team aims to provide meaningful learning opportunities that engage people with fisheries and the aquatic environment.

These experiences enable the community to participate in and contribute to a sustainable future for Western Australia’s aquatic ecosystems by increasing community understanding of the science and management behind sustainable fisheries, whilst developing and enhancing an individual’s and community’s sense of place in the aquatic environment.

Our learning programs are based on current science and data generated by scientific research at the Department of Fisheries’ Research Division. Program themes include ecosystem processes, aquatic species diversity, aquatic habitats, human impacts and aquatic natural resource management.
